Chapter 5

Chapter 5:

The Language of Texts

The next few days were a blur of texts, quick-witted banter and increasingly flirty emojis. He analyzed each message, searching for hidden meanings, subtle clues.

She did the same, no doubt, sharing screenshots with her best friend, dissecting his every word.

He learned that her favorite color was sage green, that she loved rainy days, and that she had a rescue cat named Mr. Fluffernutter. She learned that he was a terrible cook, that he collected vintage records, and that he secretly loved cheesy romantic comedies.

The digital connection only intensified his desire to see her again, to hear her laugh, to see her smile in person. It culminated in Kyle asking her out to the Tipsy Cactus Bar, known for its lively music and potent margaritas. He chose the Tipsy Cactus because it was far enough removed from the coffee shop that it felt like a real date, but close enough that he wouldn’t have to drive too far if it bombed.
